About the Project

About Gothic Listening

Gothic Listening is a field recording and experimental sound design project dedicated to listening for the gothic resonances in everyday life.

Besides being available on streaming platforms, all of the project’s sounds can be downloaded for free via Bandcamp, where they are hosted. Most sounds are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License so that they can be shared and remixed freely.

Who Are We?

Gothic Listening is run by John Savarese who launched it as an academic research-creation project, combining the study of the gothic tradition in literature, music, and film with approaches drawn from sound studies, field recording, and ecoacoustics. In addition to his contributions under the “Gothic Listening” name, the project has so far also included guest contributions and reimagined sounds from:

  • Lisa Brackenridge
  • Sophie Morgan
  • Christopher Rogers
  • Jay Smith
  • Kriti Upreti
  • Michael Veenstra
